Hundreds of desperate Angelenos flocked to the Mayfair Hotel in downtown LA after viral social media posts falsely advertised an event offering free housing, only to discover it was a private event for pre-enrolled homeless services clients.
Desperate Angelenos were left disappointed after a viral social media frenzy led hundreds to swarm the Mayfair Hotel in downtown LA, believing they could secure free housing. The event, however, was exclusively for about 300 individuals already enrolled in a Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) program and accompanied by their case managers. Crucial details regarding pre-enrollment and case manager accompaniment were omitted or downplayed in the viral posts, which instead emphasized the possibility of getting 'APPROVED ON THE SPOT!' This created a false impression that any struggling Angeleno could attend and receive housing. LAHSA, established in 1993, coordinates services for the homeless, and its case managers assist clients with housing options. The Mayfair Hotel itself was acquired by the city in August 2023 as part of Mayor Karen Bass’ homelessness initiative to provide interim housing.
