Kaitlynn Berman, a young mom stabbed 22 times by Christopher Joseph, is furious over his 'very light' 8.5-year prison sentence and the Bronx judge's comments suggesting her attacker deserved a chance to turn his life around.
Kaitlynn Berman, 23, expressed outrage after Christopher Joseph, also 23, who stabbed her 22 times in March 2022, received an 8.5-year prison sentence. Berman described the sentence as 'very, very light,' especially compared to the 20 to 25 years she expected, lamenting that Joseph was sentenced for fewer years than the number of times he stabbed her. The brutal attack occurred in her Wakefield apartment after she rebuffed Joseph's sexual advances, leaving her with permanent nerve damage and scars, and requiring 48 days of hospitalization, three surgeries, and two blood transfusions. Her 3-year-old daughter was in the adjacent room during the incident. Joseph pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second-degree, a charge that could have resulted in a 25-year sentence. While the Bronx DA's office sought 10 years and the defense argued for five, Justice Timothy Lewis settled on 8.5 years. Judge Lewis justified the sentence by noting Joseph's relative youth and expressing hope that he could 'become a different person' and 'do something positive' upon release. He also mentioned Joseph might have been under the influence of drugs and was reportedly in a gang. Berman vehemently rejects the judge's reasoning, calling Joseph a 'monster' and stating that he needs to 'suffer the consequences' for his actions, highlighting the daily physical and mental trauma she endures.
