Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions for killing his wife and son were overturned by the SC Supreme Court due to the trial clerk's misconduct, who improperly influenced jurors. Prosecutors plan a retrial, but extensive evidence of Murdaugh's financial crimes will be excluded this time.

The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions and life sentence, ruling that Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill "egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility" by suggesting his guilt to jurors. The court found Hill urged jurors not to trust Murdaugh's testimony, driven by a "siren call of celebrity" to promote her book on the trial. Although Murdaugh, who denies the murders but admits to financial misdeeds, won't be released soon as prosecutors intend to retry him, the next trial will differ significantly. Justices ruled that extensive evidence detailing Murdaugh's thefts from clients should not be allowed, limiting it to brief connections to the murder case. Hill has pleaded guilty to lying about her actions during the trial, which the court described as "breathtaking" and "disgraceful."
