Pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, 78, is serving a 20-year sentence in Hong Kong, a situation his son fears will lead to his death in prison. President Trump is expected to raise Lai's case with Chinese President Xi, but diplomatic efforts face significant hurdles amid Beijing's tough stance and the increasing difficulty of securing political prisoner releases.

Pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, 78, is serving a 20-year sentence under Hong Kong's controversial national security law, a plight his son Sebastien Lai fears will result in his death in prison and make him a martyr. This case symbolizes a sharp decline in the freedoms Beijing promised Hong Kong. US President Donald Trump has expressed sympathy for Lai and is expected to raise his case with Chinese President Xi, having done so in previous meetings where Chinese officials 'noted' his remarks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also reportedly raised Lai's release during trade talks. However, Beijing publicly remains unyielding, with its Foreign Ministry spokesperson calling Lai the 'mastermind behind the riots' and asserting that Hong Kong issues are internal affairs, rejecting foreign interference. The Hong Kong government maintains Lai received a fair trial. Experts note that securing the release of political prisoners has become harder under Xi Jinping's leadership, which prioritizes sovereignty and resists foreign interference, unlike previous administrations. While some, like Thomas Kellogg, believe both Beijing and Washington have incentives for a deal—China to signal moving on and the Trump administration to secure a diplomatic win—others, like Wilson Chan, are pessimistic, suggesting Beijing uses Lai's case to send a message. John Kamm, founder of the Dui Hua Foundation, also points to potential US 'inattention' as a factor hindering releases. Lai, a British citizen, has decided not to appeal his conviction and sentence, and his family is deeply concerned about his health issues, including heart palpitations and diabetes, fearing he will die in prison if not freed. The government is also seeking to confiscate his assets on national security grounds.
