A Chicago police officer died and another was critically injured after an individual in custody opened fire at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital on Saturday, leading to a lockdown and the suspect's apprehension.

On Saturday morning, a Chicago police officer was killed and a second officer was critically wounded following a shooting incident at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, which occurred around 10:50 am. The incident involved an individual who was in law enforcement custody and had been brought to the emergency department for treatment. Following protocol, the individual was wanded upon arrival and was constantly escorted by law enforcement. The suspect later fired shots at the officers, exited the hospital building, and was subsequently apprehended. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described the event as a "tragedy" for the city and mentioned the provision of mental health support services for police officers. The deceased officer was 38 years old with 10 years of service, while the injured officer is 57 with 21 years of experience; both were serving as transport officers. An investigation is ongoing, and a weapon has been recovered. The hospital campus was placed on lockdown, and officials confirmed that patients and staff remained safe during the incident.
