An American man, Schaefer, was deported from Indonesia after serving 11 years for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend's mother in Bali, only to face new federal charges upon his return to the U.S.

After 11 years in an Indonesian prison for the premeditated murder of his then-girlfriend's mother on the island of Bali, an American man named Schaefer was freed and deported back to the United States. He received remissions for good behavior during his sentence. Upon his arrival in Illinois, he was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and is scheduled to make an initial court appearance in Chicago on federal charges including conspiracy to kill someone in a foreign country, conspiracy to commit murder, and tampering with a victim. His former girlfriend and co-conspirator, Heather Mack, who assisted in the 'suitcase murder,' was deported in October 2021 after serving seven years and was subsequently sentenced to 26 years in prison in Chicago in January 2024 for her role in the crime.
