A woman was killed and a man seriously wounded in an early morning shark attack at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, Australia. The victims, identified as Swiss nationals, were swimming when a large bull shark attacked them.
On Thursday morning at approximately 6:30 a.m., a woman was fatally attacked by a shark, and her male companion was seriously wounded while they were swimming at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, Australia. The park is located 360 kilometers (224 miles) north of Sydney. Both victims, identified as Swiss nationals in their mid-20s, were known to each other. A bystander on the beach provided crucial first aid, applying a makeshift tourniquet to the man's leg, which paramedics credited with potentially saving his life. The woman died at the scene, while the man was airlifted to a hospital in serious but stable condition. Following the incident, beaches in the area were closed indefinitely. Authorities later determined the attack was carried out by a large bull shark and deployed five drumlines off Kylies Beach in an attempt to catch it. Experts highlighted the extreme rarity of a single shark attacking more than one person, noting it is an exceptionally unusual event.
