All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman has reportedly agreed to a massive five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, including a no-trade clause, marking his second major free agency move in as many offseasons.

All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman is set to join the Chicago Cubs after agreeing to a $175 million, five-year contract, pending a physical. The deal, which includes a no-trade provision, sees Bregman return to the free agency market for the second consecutive offseason. He previously signed a $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox last February but opted out after one season, during which he hit .273 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs in 114 games, despite missing June due to a quadriceps injury. Bregman, a two-time World Series champion with the Houston Astros, earned his third All-Star selection and posted his best OPS since 2019 with Boston. His arrival in Boston last year prompted the Red Sox to trade Rafael Devers. The Cubs, who finished second in the NL Central and made the playoffs in 2023, are bolstering their roster. Bregman's addition to an infield featuring rookie Matt Shaw and two-time Gold Glover Nico Hoerner may lead to further roster adjustments, potentially moving Shaw to a super-utility role or prompting another trade. This signing follows the Cubs' recent acquisition of right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins.
