The highly anticipated and most expensive documentary ever, 'Melania,' defied low expectations to earn $7 million in its opening weekend, marking the best debut for a documentary in 14 years despite a record $75 million investment and harsh critical reviews.

The Melania Trump documentary, 'Melania,' heavily promoted by President Donald Trump as 'a must watch,' debuted with a better-than-expected $7 million in ticket sales. Amazon MGM Studios paid a record $40 million for the rights and an additional $35 million for marketing, making it the most expensive documentary ever produced. Directed by Brett Ratner, who had been exiled from Hollywood, the film premiered in 1,778 theaters during Trump's second term. While its cost would typically signify a flop for most films, 'Melania' achieved success by documentary standards, securing the best opening weekend for a documentary (excluding concert films) in 14 years, far exceeding initial estimates of $3 million to $5 million. Presidential families usually avoid such in-office releases to prevent capitalizing on the White House. Despite its box office performance, critical reviews were overwhelmingly negative, with critics describing it as a 'medieval tribute' and a 'cheese ball infomercial.' However, audience response was highly positive, earning an 'A' CinemaScore. The film's demographic skewed towards audiences aged 55 and older (72%), female (72%), and white (75%), performing best in Southern states like Florida and Texas. This unique release occurred alongside other weekend openers, including Sam Raimi's 'Send Help' ($20 million) and Markiplier's 'Iron Lung' ($17.9 million).
