Police have intensified their search for a suspect in the killing of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro. The 47-year-old physicist and fusion scientist was shot Monday night at his apartment in Brookline, Massachusetts, and died Tuesday. The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed the homicide investigation is "active and ongoing," with no suspects currently in custody. The FBI has stated there is no known connection between Loureiro's killing and a recent shooting at Brown University. Loureiro, who joined MIT in 2016 and was named last year to lead MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was dedicated to advancing clean energy technology. He was originally from Portugal and highly respected by colleagues, students, and international leaders. A vigil was held outside his building, with many gathering to honor his life. MIT President Sally Kornbluth and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa have both issued statements mourning his "shocking loss" and calling his death "an irreparable loss for science."
