The Minnesota Vikings traded edge rusher Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles for two third-round picks, clearing significant cap space and signaling a roster reset, while Greenard secured a massive $100 million contract extension with the Eagles.

The Minnesota Vikings executed a significant trade on the second night of the NFL draft, sending veteran edge rusher Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for two third-round picks, one in the current draft and one in the next. This strategic move by the Vikings aims to create future salary cap flexibility, as Greenard, 28, was set to carry a cap hit exceeding $22 million this season. Following the trade, Greenard immediately agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract extension with the Eagles, including $50 million in fully guaranteed money, as confirmed by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Interim general manager Rob Brzezinski explained the decision was driven by the Vikings' unsustainable spending over recent years, emphasizing the challenging salary cap situation. The Eagles, needing to fill a void left by edge rusher Jaelen Phillips' departure in free agency, acquired Greenard to bolster their defensive line. For the Vikings, Greenard had become somewhat expendable due to the strong emergence of 2024 first-round pick Dallas Turner and the consistent performance of Andrew Van Ginkel when healthy. Greenard's 2025 season was limited to 12 games due to a shoulder injury, where he recorded three sacks, a significant drop from his 12 sacks in his 2024 Vikings debut after joining from the Houston Texans. The trade significantly boosted the Vikings' draft capital, providing them with a fifth top-100 selection in this year's draft. They subsequently used some of their picks to select Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks (18th overall), Cincinnati linebacker Jake Golday (51st overall), and safety Jakobe Thomas from Miami (98th overall, using a pick acquired from the Eagles).
