The Supreme Court on Friday put an end to a lengthy legal battle by rejecting an attempt to implement a new, Republican-friendly Missouri congressional map for the midterm elections. The justices upheld a Missouri Supreme Court decision, which ruled that a citizen petition requires the new map to be approved by voters in a November referendum before it can be used. This means Missouri residents will cast their votes under the same congressional districts utilized in the 2022 elections. The high court emphasized the late stage of the election process, stating that reverting to the new map would 'usher in electoral chaos.' Republicans, with the backing of Donald Trump and Governor Mike Kehoe, had hoped the revised map would help them gain an additional House seat, aiming for seven out of Missouri's eight districts. The new map, which had already been used in the August primaries, significantly redrew districts, notably reshaping Democratic Congressman Emanuel Cleaver's Kansas City-based district and causing confusion for over a million voters.
