NHL star Alexander Ovechkin has ignited a storm of controversy following his appearance in an election advertisement for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party, endorsing Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, stated he felt no hesitation, declaring, 'I’m Russian. I support my country,' and confirmed plans to retire to Russia. This public stance has triggered widespread condemnation across Europe, the United States, and Canada. Latvia has imposed an entry ban on Ovechkin, while the Ukrainian Canadian Congress demands his sanctioning and a ban from Canada, branding him a 'disgusting supporter of Russia’s genocidal war.' U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson urged the NHL to review its policies regarding Ovechkin’s support for 'the party of war criminal Putin.' Even NHL Hall of Fame goaltender Dominik Hasek attributed 'a significant share of responsibility' to Ovechkin for the conflict's casualties. The ad also featured other Kremlin propagandists.
