Dozens of students in a Northern California school district staged a massive walkout to protest a new policy that bans year-round display of symbolic flags, including rainbow Pride flags, sparking community support and a heated debate over inclusion and free speech.

Dozens of students at Sonoma Valley High School, located approximately 45 miles north of San Francisco, walked out of their classrooms to protest a new school district policy that restricts the year-round display of symbolic flags, specifically targeting rainbow Pride flags. The demonstration, organized by the school's Gender & Sexualities Alliance (GSA), saw students encouraged to wear rainbow colors and carry Pride flags and protest signs. The student action was met with significant community solidarity, as local businesses raised Pride flags and roughly 60 staff members signed a memo supporting LGBTQ+ students. District leaders defended the policy, stating it was a matter of equal treatment, as the Pride flag had been given permanent placement without a formal process for other groups to request similar privileges. School board President David Bell also cited legal concerns tied to a 2022 Supreme Court ruling regarding the First Amendment. The policy, which passed 3-2, limits year-round displays to American and California state flags, with symbolic flags like the Pride flag only permitted for designated awareness periods such as Pride Month. Advocacy groups, while disappointed in the board's decision, praised the students' determination and resilience.
