A former fraternity leader at Northern Arizona University has been jailed for two months and given three years probation after an 18-year-old pledge died from severe alcohol poisoning during a hazing incident involving vodka.

Carter Eslick, a 20-year-old former fraternity leader and pledge master at Northern Arizona University, has been sentenced to two months in jail and three years of supervised probation for a felony hazing charge. The charge stems from the death of 18-year-old pledge Colin Daniel Martinez, who died of alcohol poisoning with a blood-alcohol level of 0.425 per cent after a hazing incident on January 31. Martinez was one of four Delta Tau Delta pledges forced to share two bottles of vodka to induce vomiting. Witnesses reported checking his pulse and adjusting his sleeping position throughout the night. Coconino County Attorney Ammon Barker emphasized the serious dangers of hazing. Eslick's probation conditions include delivering 305 anti-hazing presentations, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and completing required treatment. The university suspended the fraternity, and the national chapter was subsequently closed. The article also briefly highlights ongoing scrutiny of fraternities, mentioning a separate lawsuit against a Cornell University fraternity for alleged sexual assault involving multiple men and incapacitating substances.
